Stretch velvet is a versatile fabric that looks fabulous for skater dresses, competition Country or Dancesport dresses.
The fabric is elegant, durable and looks great for many wearings.
I tell my clients to hand-wash the stretch velvet dresses, even when it’s rhinestoned. (Be sure to check with your dressmaker to be certain they did not use any materials that will shrink with washing.)
Stretch velvet adds a depth and richness to skater and Dancesport dresses that no other fabric equals.
Rhinestones and sew-on jewels seem to sparkle more than usual when glued on velvet.
Beaded fringe also looks great on velvet for the same reason.
When making or altering a dress, stretch velvet is easy to sew. Be certain to use a velvet pressing board to the nap looking great.
One of my favorite things about this dress is the iridescent chiffon – also called “georgette” outside the U.S.
The sheer fabric extends the neckline making Carolyn look taller. It also creates lovely flowing accents in the back.
Tip: To keep the chiffon accents in place, I formed a loop out of elastic that wraps around the criss cross straps.
The straps, thought thin, offer good bust support. If you or your client need extra support, feel free to add several thin straps, or wider straps for the ultimate breast support.

How do you insert the piece of fabric into zipper area and then add new zipper?
Hi Sharon, since you’re in the sewing school, I’ll answer this in detail on the next live member Q&A call, okay?
